My recent consulting projects include:
giving professional advice to the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISER) to support the implementation of the Payment Times Reporting Scheme, including identifying relevant approaches to regulatory practice, key capabilities and opportunities to build professional support networks
providing research services to DISER on issues relating to small business access to justice, including national and international legal and regulatory frameworks and support services
undertaking a review of small business skills development for the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, including available training options and levels of engagement with capability development
writing a significant research report on the latest international thinking and approaches to best practice regulation for the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, which included a range of options to progress regulation reform.
I work with a number of Australian Government departments and agencies to design, develop and facilitate learning and development programs to build management and leadership capability and other core craft skills including strategic thinking, writing, stakeholder engagement and advising government. I also coach staff to support them in growing their capability and confidence to improve performance and achieve their goals.
Prior to consulting, my most recent positions and key projects were:
Branch Manager (various Senior Executive Service Band 1 positions) — Safe Work Australia (SWA)
I successfully led negotiations with state/territory governments, industry and union representatives that reached agreement on improving national consistency in explosives regulation across Australia, and managed the regulation impact assessment process for the project.
Director — Sectoral Research Reports Section, Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency (AWPA)
I established AWPA’s sectoral research agenda, led industry sectoral studies analysing factors impacting demand for — and expected supply of — skilled workers in the information and communications technology (ICT) and resources sectors, and managed reference groups and stakeholder consultation processes undertaken to inform the studies.
Director — Explosives Section, Safe Work Australia (SWA)
I undertook a comprehensive review of prior work to achieve nationally consistent explosives laws in Australia, provided specialist policy advice on how to effectively progress the development of these laws, and secured executive and ministerial support for structural and strategic changes to re-focus the project.
Director (various positions) — former Department of Employment and Workplace Relations
I led sections responsible for advising Government on policy and regulation reform in a number of workplace relations fields.
A significant reform project was negotiating with state and territory governments to reach agreement on creating the national workplace relations system for the private sector, and providing public policy analysis and advice and stakeholder management strategies that informed the Commonwealth’s position and approach to negotiations.
